Overview

MT VersaTile is a system of nodes for Substance Designer developed by Matthew Taylor that attempt to simplify the process of creating complex modular-pattern-based materials such as brickwork, tiles, parquet flooring, paving etc. The system is comprised of a series of pattern generator nodes and utility nodes that can interpret the various data outputs of the generator nodes and process them to generate maps and effects that aid in the process of converting all this information into a final material. The pattern generator nodes have a high degree of customizability and always produce perfect tileability. They do all the technical work so you don’t have to.

The basic process is:

Drop the pattern generator node of your choice into your material graph and adjust its parameters to your liking.
Make or import a material graph that will represent the surface material and instantiate it into your material graph.
Use the MT VT Mapper Material node to align and scatter the surface material onto the tiles’ surface.
The rest is up to you. Add all the scratches, edge damage and surface imperfections you want your material to have. For all per-tile variations, such as random values, random gradients, random map sampling etc, the utility nodes provide more than enough options for you to build your final material without restrictions. You can even generate specific color patterns to apply to your tiles!

Anyone who wants to make pattern-based PBR materials in Substance 3D Designer, particularly if you want to speed up the process of creating such materials, and especially if you want high levels of paramatrization and flexibility.
